ABOUT KAITIAKITANGA

Kaitiakitanga is the guardianship, protection and care of our natural environment, resources and people.

TE AO MĀORI WORLDVIEW

We embrace a Te Ao Māori worldview about the interconnectedness which exists between people and nature.

OUR VALUES

Kaitiakitanga, Excellence, Tikanga, Integrity and Innovation are our core values and underpin how we operate our business.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

We foster a culture of continually improving ourselves as people and as a business.

EXCELLENCE ON FARM

New Zealand dairy farmers are among the world’s most sustainable.  We incentivise our farmers to achieve high standards of animal welfare and environmental care.

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

We hold New Zealand, and globally recognised, certifications affirming our

commitment to sustainable, innovative and environmental best practices.

OUR KAITIAKITANGA STORY

Our Kaitiakitanga Story began when our founding leaders and Māori Trusts established Miraka upon a Te Ao Māori worldview that there is an close relationship and interconnectedness between people and nature.

From that stems Kaitiakitanga – the guardianship, protection and care of the natural environment, resources and people.  Kaitiakitanga is one of our core values.

Miraka became a Certified B Corporation in February 2024 joining world-leading enterprises which are transforming the global economic system.

B Corp recognises excellence in social, business and environmental impact.

Being a Certified B Corporation aligns with everything we stand for – excellence in values and principles; business, social outcomes, and environmental leadership, or Kaitiakitanga as we know it.

Our products carry New Zealand’s highly recognised Toitū CarbonReduce certification.

This affirms that our carbon footprint has been measured, verified and is being reduced in line with climate science and best practice.  Issued by Toitū Envirocare, the company’s origins are in science, environmental regeneration and economic sustainability.

Toitū’s certifications meet, and in many instances exceed, the requirements of the ISO (International Standards Organisation).

As a food business, we treat the manufacturing and production of food for our customers in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas in a careful and responsible manner.

Miraka is a proud Food Safety System Certified organisation.  We are accredited under the internationally recognised FSSC 22000 programme.

FSSC 22000 provides reassurance and trust to consumers and the food industry around the world.

Certified organisations must meet specific requirements under the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), have robust integrity programmes, undergo surveillance audits, and must be recertified every three (3) years.

KAITIAKITANGA REPORT

Our kaitiakitanga report describes our goals, actions and performance across both Te Taiao (the environment) and Ngā Tangata (our people).

It is part of our ongoing commitment to be open about our challenges and successes.

The report describes the projects and initiatives our kaimahi (staff) and farmer suppliers have undertaken across both our factory and farms.

We look forward to sharing these stories in our annual kaitiakitanga report .

OUR PLANT USES

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our dairy processing plant at Mokai, 30 kilometres north-west of Taupō, is the world’s first to use renewable geothermal energy.

It emits 92% less manufacturing carbon emissions than traditional coal-fired factories, giving it one of the lowest carbon footprints that there is globally.

Our CO2 emissions savings is equivalent to removing 5,000 cars from New Zealand roads for one year.
